Water, Energy, & Environment Task Force
Please join the East Bay Leadership Council's Water, Energy, & Environment Task Force for a discussion on the potential for water recycling in California and the Bay Area. We are pleased to feature presentations on two recent studies that provide a statewide and local perspective on the potential for water recycling:
- Harold Leverenz from UC Davis will present on the findings of the 2023 Water Research Foundation (WRF) Study "Identifying the Amount of Wastewater that is Available and Feasible to Recycle in California."
- Dave Richardson of Woodard & Curran will present on the recently completed regional recycled water study by the Bay Area Clean Water Agencies (BACWA) "Regional Evaluation of Potential Nutrient Discharge by Water Recycling" that takes a deeper dive into evaluating Bay Area water recycling potential as a method of reducing nutrient discharges to the Bay.
OUR SPEAKERS
Harold Leverenz is an environmental engineer at Biohabitats and research engineer in civil engineering at the University of California Davis. His background is in water and wastewater process pilot testing and modeling, natural treatment systems, and resource recovery. His recent projects have included the development and testing of novel water and wastewater treatment processes, such as nutrient recovery from urine and digestate, anaerobic bioreactors, partial closed loop water reuse systems, anoxic treatment wetlands, and rainwater as alternative water supply. Harold received degrees in biosystems engineering at Michigan State University and doctorate at UC Davis. Harold is a registered civil engineer in California. Harold was principal investigator in the WRF study along with Ryujiro Tsuchihashi of Jacobs Engineering and Peter Lescure of Lescure Engineering.
Dave Richardson is a Senior Principal and an Environmental and Water Resources Engineer with Woodard & Curran, and manages wastewater treatment and water recycling programs and projects, including Regional San’s Harvest Water Program. He has been Principal in charge for the BACWA Regional Water Recycling project in support of the regional nutrient permit, seeking the potential for offsets in nutrient discharge along side green infrastructure offsets. He has worked on water recycling master plans for numerous Bay Area and northern California communities over the past 3 decades, on behalf of both water and wastewater agencies. He has a BS and MS in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Stanford University and an MBA from the Stanford GSB. Dave’s coauthor, Carrie Del Boccio, is the Recycled Water National Practice Leader for Woodard & Curran, and co-Project Manager (along with Mike Falk of HDR) for the BACWA recycled water study.
