PFAS in Water
Chemicals called PFAS have been in the headlines lately: These contaminants are the focus of a major Hollywood movie, a Congressional task force, and considerable public concern.
Often called “forever chemicals” because of their extreme persistence, PFAS are ubiquitous in the environment and are poorly removed by traditional drinking water and wastewater treatment trains. This presentation will provide an overview of PFAS and their relevance to the water industry.

We will welcome two speakers, Thomas Bruton from the Green Science Policy Institute and Alexandra Bradley from the Zone 7 Water Agency. 

About our Speakers: 
Thomas Bruton received his Ph.D. in environmental engineering at UC Berkeley, where his research focused on cleanup of PFAS-contaminated sites. In 2017, Tom joined the Green Science Policy Institute, which works collaboratively with partners in academia, government, business, and the nonprofit sector to reduce the use of harmful chemicals in products.  Tom currently leads the Institute’s work on PFAS, which includes researching the presence of PFAS in consumer products and indoor environments, and providing scientific information and recommendations to decision makers in government and business. Prior to graduate school, Tom worked as an environmental consultant in the clean water industry. He is the author of several peer-reviewed scientific papers.

Alexandra Bradley joined Zone 7 in 2019 as the agency’s Communication Specialist.  Her expertise is public outreach and engagement, public and government relations, and budget/project management.  Alexandra holds BA degrees in Economics and Political Science from CSU Stanislaus.
