Earlier this month the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to place a 0.625% sales tax measure on the June 2026 ballot to backfill federal cuts. If approved by voters, the measure would generate approximately $150 million to support general operations of the County for five years. Given recent federal and state cuts, the county is hoping to reduce impacts to healthcare providers as well as critical health programs such as Medi-Cal and CalFresh.
Please join EBLC's Health Task Force for a conversation with Supervisor John Gioia, who is helping to lead the advancement of this measure, to learn more about its structure, scope, and impacts should it pass in June.
OUR SPEAKER

Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia was first elected to the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors in 1998 and has been re-elected six times by large majorities. He represents 220,000 residents in the western most urban and diverse area of the county. He previously served for 10 years on the East Bay Municipal Utility District Board Board, serving as President in 1995 and 1996. Supervisor Gioia is a recognized leader in Bay Area regional government where he has led initiatives to improve our air quality, address climate change, and make San Francisco Bay healthier and more publicly accessible. He served as Governor Brown’s appointee to the California Air Resources Board from 2013 to 2020 and has been on the Bay Area Air Quality Management District Board since 2006, serving as Chair in 2012. Supervisor Gioia grew up in Richmond, graduated from El Cerrito High School and the University of California, Berkeley with a B.A. in Political Science and earned his law degree at U.C. Berkeley. He was selected to participate in Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government’s Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government.
