The 2026 East Bay Leadership Series continues with an exclusive conversation featuring Leon Panetta, former U.S. Secretary of Defense and Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

Unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 2011 as the nation’s 23rd Secretary of Defense, Panetta brings more than five decades of experience in public service at the highest levels of government. Over the course of his distinguished career, he has served in numerous leadership roles, including Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, White House Chief of Staff under President Bill Clinton, Director of the Office of Management and Budget, and as a longtime member of the U.S. House of Representatives representing California’s Central Coast.

As CIA Director, Panetta led the intelligence operation that brought Osama bin Laden to justice. As Secretary of Defense, he oversaw a new U.S. defense strategy, led critical counterterrorism efforts, and strengthened alliances around the world.
