Roberta Achtenberg currently serves as a Commissioner of the United States Commission on Civil Rights. Previously, Ms. Achtenberg was appointed by President Bill Clinton to serve as Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Deparment of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). She worked for over 15 years as a civil rights attorney, nonprofit director and legal educator. She cofounded the National Center for Lesbian rights, which is a national non-profit public interest law firm that advocates policy change for the LGBT community.
