Housing Task Force Update

The East Bay Leadership Council Housing Task Force met on Tuesday, February 26^th for a presentation and discussion of the CASA Compact. Representatives from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) were on hand to present the CASA Compact’s proposals, answer questions and explain next steps.

Beginning in 2017, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) convened a group of identified stakeholders to discuss possible solutions to the Bay Area’s housing crisis. The resulting policy proposals, referred to as the CASA Compact, was constructed over an 18-month period and was organized around three principle desired outcomes:

1. Increasing housing production at all levels of affordability
2. Preserving existing affordable housing
3. Protecting vulnerable households from housing instability and displacement.

In order to achieve these objectives, the CASA Compact proposes ten policy changes ranging from direct rent assistance to reforms to the housing approval process. Numerous members of the state legislature have introduced legislation based on the recommendations of the CASA Compact. The EBLC Housing Task Force will continue to monitor these bills as they further develop.
