Water Task Force Meeting
Are Our Water Reservoir Dams Safe?
Images of water cascading over the spillways at the Oroville Dam last February and the evacuation of about 188,000 people down the Feather River were compelling and frightening. Would the dam fail and cause extreme damage and death? Fortunately, decisions were made and the dam remained damaged, but intact. It was a close call causing intense engineering, maintenance, construction, and management reviews. Of course political opinions are unrelenting. Repairs are underway while the reviews continue. What has been learned from this almost disaster?
Our guest is Sharon Tapia, Chief of the Division of Safety of Dams in the California Department of Water Resources.
