Infrastructure Task Force
Please join the East Bay Leadership Council’s Infrastructure Taskforce for a presentation by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) on their recent Next Generation Bay Area Freeways Study. The event will feature Anup Tapase, Next Generation Freeways Study Project Manager with MTC, who will discuss the study’s findings.
The Bay Area’s freeways are too congested — people and goods are stuck in traffic — creating problems for individuals, communities, the environment, and the economy. Launched in early 2022, the Next Generation Bay Area Freeways Study is analyzing the feasibility, costs, benefits, and public support for tolling certain Bay Area freeways as a strategy for delivering reliably high-speed travel and reducing greenhouse gas emissions caused by passenger vehicles. The Next Generation Freeways Study is examining freeway corridors that are (or would be) served well by public transit, and seeks to determine if pricing would encourage drivers to travel during off-peak hours, consolidate their trips, choose alternate destinations, or take public transit or carpool instead of driving alone. The study also seeks to answer questions around who is using the freeways, how tolls can be implemented equitably, other ways to improve transit, and impacts on local streets parallel to freeways.
